Mzansi’s dopest new Amapiano duos to look out for in 2021

 

Amapiano has emerged to be the best music genre in South Africa over a few years. It has also influenced dance which has given rise to viral dance videos and Tik Tok stars. Based on listeners’ views, the following are the 3 top amapiano duos.

 

1. Mapara A Jazz

They are a duo known for their hit ‘John Vuli gate’. At the peak of the song ‘John vuli gate, the duo released an EP they named after the viral song. Mano Nephawe aged 29 and Leonard Malatji aged 31 make up the duo known as Mapara A Jazz. In simple translation, the name means ‘the top dogs of Jazz’.

The duo has been making music since 2007 in their home town Pretoria in Mamelodi. Earlier on they called themselves MaBen10 as they invaded caravans, tents and gigs. The not so popular barcadi genre is indigenous to Pretoria and it influences the sound of Mapara A Jazz.

 

 

2. Jazzi Disciples

They are a male duo straight from Alexander, North of Johannesburg. Jazz disciples made a mark in the amapiano industry for their dance hits ‘sgubu se monati’ and ‘long lasting’. Their encompassing chant ‘Amapiano is a lifestyle’, has become a party anthem.

On the 1st of November 2019, they released their first studio album titled Disciples of Piano. The album featured collaborations from local musicians such as Okmalumkoolkat, Vigro Deep, Nomisupasta and DJ Buckz. In 2019, they were nominated for Best Amapiano record at the Dance Music Awards South Africa. To further expand the duo’s sound and vision in 2020 they released solo projects. In March 2020 JazziDisciples released Mr JazziQ’s EP titled 0303, which featured vocalist Moonchild Sanelly. Josiah De Disciple’s EP titled SOM (Spirits Of Makoela) was released in May 2020.

 

3. MFR Souls

MFR

They are popular for their hit songs ‘Amanikiniki‘ and ‘Love you tonight‘. Tumelo’ Maero’ Nedondwe and Tumelo’ Force’ Mabe are the members of the MFR Souls two-member amapiano duo. Although MFR Souls came to the spotlight in 2019, their musical journey began in 2013. The two guys grew up together in Ekurhuleni (East Rand), Katlehong as best friends.

Fast forward to 2019, the band made headlines with their hit song Love You Tonight featuring big names DJ Maphorisa, Sha Sha, Kabza De Small. They advanced significantly in their career once they were signed to Sony, one of the world’s largest record label companies. It hardly seemed real to them, and reality finally hit when they had sat down in Sony offices and signed a contract, which would end up propelling them straight to the top.
