Mano Nephawe aged 29 and Leonard Malatji aged 31 make up the duo known as Mapara A Jazz. In simple translation, the name means ‘the top dogs of Jazz’. The duo have been making music since 2007 in their home town Pretoria in Mamelodi. Earlier on they called themselves MaBen10 as they invaded tarvans, tents and gigs. The not so popular barcadi genre is indigenous to Pretoria and it influences the sound of Mapara A Jazz.

In an interview, the duo had this to say;

“Honestly speaking we told ourselves that our time will come, that is why we never gave up. But then because it has been so long waiting for this, we are like, WOW! We have always been known for the original Pitori sound, barcadi music. If you listen, that is why our piano is different, there is this rawness about it”

Speaking on the hit single ‘John vuli gate, Mapara A Jazz revealed that the song was recorded in July 2020. The song became magical after they met Ntosh Gazi and Colano, who spiced it up. The song was widely streamed across the world and the pair made quite a fortune. Now that they have made a name for themselves, they surely are under pressure to maintain the level.
