Atletico Madrid survived a relentless Barcelona onslaught at the Metropolitano on Tuesday night, securing their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a 3-2 aggregate victory despite a 2-1 defeat on the night.
Trailing 2-0 after a clinical first-leg performance by Diego Simeone’s side, Barcelona arrived in the Spanish capital needing a historic comeback. They nearly found it, erasing the aggregate deficit within the opening 25 minutes during a frantic start that stunned the home support.
The visitors wasted no time, finding the net just five minutes after kickoff. Lamine Yamal capitalized on a heavy touch from former Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, sliding a composed finish under goalkeeper Juan Musso to make it 2-1 on aggregate. The momentum stayed firmly with the Blaugrana, and in the 24th minute, the tie was sensationally leveled. Dani Olmo threaded a precise pass to Ferran Torres, who unleashed a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner, leaving Musso stationary and the aggregate score at 2-2.
Barcelona missed a golden opportunity to take the lead on the night just minutes later when Fermin Lopez, left unmarked in the box, saw his diving header expertly blocked by a sprawling Musso.
That miss proved costly. In the 31st minute, Marcos Llorente exploited space on the right flank before cutting back for Ademola Lookman. The Nigerian international clinical finish restored Atletico’s aggregate lead, making it 3-2 and dampening the spirits of the traveling Catalan fans.
The second half was defined by narrow margins and disciplinary woes for Xavi’s men. Ten minutes after the restart, Torres believed he had secured his second of the night with a cushioned volley, but a lengthy VAR review ruled the goal out for a marginal offside.
Barcelona’s uphill battle became a mountain in the closing stages when Eric Garcia was shown a straight red card for tripping Alexander Sorloth as the striker raced toward goal. Despite being down to 10 men, Barca pushed forward, with Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo both seeing headers fly narrowly wide in stoppage time.
The victory sends Atletico Madrid to their first semi-final since 2016, where they will face either Arsenal or Sporting CP.
“It’s been 14 years now. Seeing the team still competing excites me,” said Atletico manager Diego Simeone. “We are back among the top four in Europe. We know our strengths and weaknesses. We are ready.”
