Thuso Mbedu’s winning streak continues. She has won The Best Performing Female Award for The Underground Railroad. The award season is upon us, and the South African flag is already flying the highest, and Thuso Mbedu is holding it.

Thuso plays the character of Cora Randall, a young woman who escapes a slave plantation looking for freedom. Vita takes a train and begins a terrifying journey while being chased by a ruthless slave catcher named Arnold Ridgeway.

The series is a 10 episode odyssey and details all the gruesome tails of an enslaved person in the 1800s. Thuso’s portrayal of Cora is nothing short of amazing. She brought all of herself into the character.

The 31-year-old walked the blue carpet on Sunday, looking all kinds of cute in a Dior two-piece. The Independent Spirit Awards honour the best in Indie Films, and TV and Thuso are amongst the top.

Thuso accepted her award in front of a cheering crowd, making her teary speech; she thanked everyone involved in making the series.

Thuso Mbedu is on her second win as Cora, and she won her first award for Best Performance in a New Series at the Gotham Independent Film Award in 2021.

The ceremony took place at the Santa Monica Pier in California. Thuso took to her Instagram page to continue her celebration and appreciation. Thuso acknowledged how hectic the journey to the awards was.

” What a day( I think I’ll need to take a nap for 3-5 business days to wrap my head around today fully)”, she wrote.

She thanked Barry Jenkins and the Amazon studios where the series is currently streaming. Thuso encouraged people to go and watch the series because she says it is an absolute masterpiece.

If you haven’t seen it, brace yourself for a dark and emotionally charged story that will have you laughing and crying simultaneously. Thuso had to learn the American accent to play Cora, and she completely disappeared into this role.

We are certainly looking forward to more work from this young woman, and she is a star on the rise. We are currently bracing ourselves for her next significant role in The Woman King with Viola Davis. The movie is set for cinematic release later this year.
