Bheki Cele’s alcohol ban centered on personal issues
Personal issues are clouding the Minister’s judgement and South Africans are not happy. Subsequent to Bheki Cele revealing how unbothered he is by his unpopularity, he pulls a shocker that makes people hate him even more. The Minister reveals how the alcohol ban is all a personal issue.
“I have seen alcohol finishing friends. [One] was a high-flying man. He died because of alcohol. I saw a [drunk] friend shoot his wife. I saw alcohol stripping people of dignity, progress & wealth and don’t have much good to say about alcohol,” he says.

This decision by Bheki Cele sees thousands losing their jobs and the economy losing a big chunk of revenue. The alcohol ban however was a means to curb the Covid-19 virus and Cele uses this to his own advantage. South African turn Twitter into a circus with masses calling out the Minister’s pettiness. But does he really care? This is what some tweeps had to say:
By minister Bheki Cele‘s logic we should get rid of many things/many roles … even cops. ” We have seen cops finishing friends. Some were high-flying cops and some died because of incompetence or power abuse. Some cops murder civilians…” Moral: right diagnosis, wrong SOLUTION.
The liquor industry has to collapse and have people lose jobs just because Bheki Cele had a friend or friends that abused alcohol. This is the most ridiculous thing ever for someone to use personal experience to bully the entire country and industry. Barbaric!
The ActionSA leader, Herman Mashaba joins in the outcry and calls out the Minister’s bad choice of friends which he now uses to run down one of the main revenue streams in SA. “The South African economy is being battered, people losing jobs, families, and loved ones. The Minister of Police hates alcohol because his circle of his friends abuse alcohol. Alcohol ban must remain because of friends the Minister keeps,” he says.
