Recently, television channels have realised that their viewers are more likely to watch limited and short series than long-running Telenovelas. This has led to channels like M-Net cancelling great shows like Legacy. They are always trying to air programmes that align with what their customers want. Mzansi Magic released a most-viewed list for November, and Umkhokha beats The Queen as the second most-watched soapie peaking at 967 000 views on one episode.
Umkhokha, which started airing in October, has been in the headlines several times. The Television series debuted with many controversies when it first aired after the members of Shembe church complained that the producers were mimicking their church. After several comparisons between the faith-based series and the church, viewers’ interest in the drama series peaked.
The series then stopped airing after its first season ended on its 13th episode. The show was replaced by the second season of The Republic, and Mzansi Magic is yet to announce when the second season of Umkhokha will be back on screens. However, the viewers have been vocal about wanting more of the faith-based series sooner than later and tipping some cast members for awards.
The Queen dethroned as the second most-watched series on Mzansi Magic
The Queen has been airing on Mzansi Magic since 2016 and has managed to keep viewers hooked on its storylines. The Ferguson films production has managed to earn spots in the most viewed programmes on Mzansi magic from time to time. It is one of the few South African telenovelas that have managed to not lose viewership over the years and avoided cancellation.
For a new series to beat The Queen when it comes to views is a dream for most production houses. However, fans of Umkhokha and DSTV viewers have shown that they are more interested in series that run for a short time and end and not long soapies that drag storylines for years.
