Her political career kicks off in 1990 to which she lands a number of titles in the ANC. Starting off in the Women’s League she becomes the chairperson for the league in 1992. Serving for two years, Maite is elected Member of Parliament in the National Assembly.
This sees her joining the diplomatic service and was serving as commissioner to Malaysia. Here she works with the Philippines and Brunei from 1995 to 1999.
In 1999, she becomes a High Commissioner to India, servicing Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, the Maldives and Nepal from until 2005.
In 2004, she serves as a member of the NEC and NWC of the ANCWL until 2008. During the same period, Maite serves as deputy secretary-general of the ANC in Limpopo and MEC for Local Government and Housing.
2018 sees the minister assuming the role of Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform up to 2019. In 2019, she is elected Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities.
