Harare man falls and disappears into Victoria Falls gorge
A male tourist fell and disappeared into the Victoria Falls gorge on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The man fell into the gorge at around 2:30 pm in the afternoon on New Year’s Day. A rescue team was called after a woman he was with screamed for help after the man fell into the gorge while they were taking pictures.
He disappeared in the mist.
The rescue was quickly dispatched to look for him but he was not seen yesterday. The search continues today.
Zimbabwe National Parks (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo told Savanna News that the tourist fell into the gorge around 2.30pm while he was with a female companion.
“There was an incident this afternoon when a 40-year-old man fell into the gorge around 2.30 pm. We are on the ground searching for him,” said Farawo.

The unfortunate incident happened as the Zambezi river’s water levels are high due to the heavy rains experienced in the last month.
The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) this week said an estimated 513 cubic metres per second were flowing into the Victoria Falls as of December 23 2020. This is a significant rise from 302 cubic metres per second from the same time in 2019.
Last year Zimbabwean man Elmon Muleya, 29, from Victoria Falls town survived after he fell in a gorge into the Zambezi River before a boulder landed on him crushing both legs. He was retrieved by the rescue team.
In a similar incident, a tourist from Johannesburg died after falling into the gorge while trying to recover his spectacles.
