Gomora Beats The Queen, Now Mzansi Magic Most Watched Soapie

Gomora beats The Queen to become the most-watched Mzansi Magic most watched soapie with an estimated viewership of 11 450 95 viewers.

The annual Royalty Soapie Awards saw Gomora winning big courtesy of their interesting storyline. The Seriti Films produced soapie is currently the most-watched show on Mzansi Magic with 11 450 95 in ratings for September, while The Queen came second with 11 080 51. A bigger difference is expected in the coming few months given the momentum Gomora is growing at.

How Gomora Beat The Queen To Become Mzansi Magic Most Watched Soapie

For one, the casting is superb and strikes a balance between veteran actors and the supporting actor and this has made the drama series explode into the limelight. The River and The Queen boast with a number of well-seasoned actors which have made a mark in the entertainment industry. Actors like Brenda, SK Khoza, Rapulana Seiphemo and award-winning actors like Brenda Ngxoli have failed to make a mark as the script works against them.

Whilst actors like Katlego Danke, Connie Chiume, and Zolisa Xaluva are shining on Gomora as they stepped out of their comfort zones by taking on roles that are the exact opposite of their usual roles.

Connie Chiume who was known for her sweet, kind, and motherly role of MamoKete on Rhythm City has now taken a role of a vicious, manipulative and at times hilarious gangster MamSonto and delivers it exceptionally. It never feels forced like the case with The Queen’s Harriet Khoza.

Katlego Danke who usually takes on pinkish, cute roles as a professional is now a hijacker who could be holding a gun for the first time. Such changes are refreshing to see. Everyone remembers Zolisa Xaluva as Diamond Mabuza from The Queen. He was spectacular as a villain and absolutely thrilling to watch. We never got enough of his villainy because it felt real and all the girls had a soft spot for his character.

Xaluva has now taken the role of a principal called Melusi who is an academic, soft-hearted man and a loving husband, which is relatable. It’s not just the veterans who are a class-act, there are also new characters such as; Mazet, Ntokozo, and Teddy who are acing their roles. The Throne’s Kabelo Moalusi recently joined the show to take on the role of Detective Kotsi Mahasela investigating the killing of Mohato by Nthati and MamSonto.

Rumour has it that the new viewership patterns are said to be the reason why The Fergusons want to force a deal for The Queen to be aired on SABC2.  This new development with regards to the viewership has forced a number of production companies to revisit their storylines and beef up their casts.

Generations: The Legacy has dominated the soapie industry but Gomora poses a threat and the loss of relevance of the hit soapies has been pinned to their behind-the-scenes dirty wars.
Generations: The Legacy
Imbewu has been making strides in gaining viewership and its throwing in veteran actors to maintain their ever-increasing viewership. With Gomora becoming Mzansi Magic’s most-watched soap opera, it is now aiming to beat Uzalo as the most followed show in South Africa.
