For years Skeem Saam has managed to wow Mzansi and Africa Tsoai who plays John Maputla is one of the star actors who have managed to bring out the fun from the educational drama series. Well, John Maputla is one of the most-loved characters on SABC 1’s Skeem Saam.
On Skeem Saam, John Maputla is a university lecturer cum businessman. A gentle giant, intelligent and confident. His life revolves around his family and work. He is Meikie’s husband and together they have two sons, Leeto and Thabo.
SABC Education describes his character as, “A lot of pressure was put on him as a kid to succeed, and he never disappointed his parents. He became one of the most celebrated lecturers in his community. He wants the very best for his children and will not tolerate anything less than an excellent academic performance from them. He’s a loyal husband and dedicated father. He’s the sort of person you wouldn’t mind facing a crisis with.”
The man behind the no-nonsense character is actor Africa Tsoai. Africa has acted in Mokgonyana Matswale as well as Bophelo ke Semphekgo.

The actor was born in Graskop in Mpumalanga – not far from the place popularly known as God’s Window. He later relocated to Bushbukridge. His parents stayed in Soweto.

He Worked As A Petrol Attended
At one point the actor used to work as a petrol attendant in Johannesburg. He wanted to a lawyer but couldn’t fulfil his dream because his parents didn’t have the means to take him to school.

Before the fame, he used to model for brands. He was also a photographer.

However, in an interview with Pearl Modiadie on Zaziwa in 2016, Africa revealed that Lydia Mokgoloshi, who plays Koko Manthsa, is his favourite South African actress.
