Durban University of Technology shuts all five campuses until further notice

The Durban University of Technology has shut all its Durban campuses until further notice. This comes after a huge number of students invaded the sports centre on the Steve Biko campus in Durban, violating COVID-19 regulations.

The University confirms the news saying thousands of people gathered after acting in response to a fake social media post inviting walk in students to register. The university did not invite students to register and all on campus assistance is currently suspended.

However, on the bright side, online registration will continue but without on campus help. A significant number of people continued to occupy the sports centre during the night and refused to leave the campus.

The situation worsened with protesters mill around at the Steve Biko campus, hurling stones at buildings, damaging and vandalising university property. The Police are working on the situation and trying to disperse the masses.

This morning, Durban University of Technology Student Representative Council president, Zabelo Ntuli informed the students gathered outside the university that they would be shutting down the university as of today because of the poor management by the institution.

“The university made a blunder and they are now blaming us as the leadership. They are the ones that called you to come here last week but now, they are claiming that they knew nothing about this.

“As from now on, we are going to make sure that we enter these locked gates, by fire, by force. There is no turning back,” said Ntuli.

“From the look of things the university is blaming students for their own poor planning and mismanagement. There is lack of accommodation and as students we are not yet registered,” reports one of the students during the protest.
