Mapisa- Nqakula served under former Presidents Thabo Mbeki, Kglema Mothlante and Jacob Zuma. From May 2002 to April 2004, she served as the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs. She was appointed Minister of Home Affairs in April 2004 the position she held till May 2009 and succeeded by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma .
Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was appointed Minister of Correctional Services on 11 May 2009 till 12 June 2012. She was appointed Minister of Defence and Military Veterans of South Africa from June 2012 to date.
