SA Style Awards 2020: Best and Worst Dressed Plus the Winners
On Saturday the 21st of November 2020 the 24th Annual SA Style Awards were held at the Sandton Sun Hotel Reception. The awards are an anticipated gathering of glitz and glamour and a win is a great nod of approval. With model and television presenter Ayanda Thabethe hosting the ceremony many are excited to find out who the winners are but most importantly how the guests will be dressed. Of course in light of the current pandemic the guest list will be quite short. No love lost as there was still plenty to talk about.
This year’s theme was “Denim Couture”. The founder of the awards, Jillian Grogor says that, “Style is knowing who you are, what you want, and possessing the passion and flair to make it possible.” These words are the premise behind the awards as Grogor wants to escape the traditional views on fashion.
Critics of the awards say that it is more of a popularity contest with Instagram follows being the main reason some people getting nominated. As for this year’s awards many Twitter users were quick to lament over what they saw as an underwhelming red carpet.
Best Dressed
It’s only right to come to the SA Style Awards with your fashion game on point. Quite a few celebrities new exactly what they were doing.
First we have Nadia Nakai. The rapper and songwriter wowed fashion critics with this Gert-Johan Coetzee design. She was the winner of the Most Stylish Performing Artist award. We also have Tansey Coetzee who is our absolute favourite and number one best dressed.
Then we have Yamsin Furmie won Most Innovative Style and it is clear why. Ama Qamata won The Next Big Thing as she was the star of Netflix’s South African production.
Phathu Makwarela gave us a much needed pop of colour with yellow denim which was put together well with the rest of his outfit. Phathu won Most Stylish Media Personality. Sindi Dlathu, who plays Lindiwe in The River wore a stunning denim gown which stood out. She won the Most Stylish Performing Artist on Film or TV.
The Most Stylish Model award was given Blue Mambo and no one could dispute her win.
Worst Dressed
Imagine going to the SA Style Awards and being on the worst dressed list? The embarrassment. Unfortunately that didn’t stop some of the looks from flopping anyway.
It really is strange that the man that designed Nadia Nakai’s stunning dress would end up on the worst dressed. A whole designer at that! Many were disappointed and confused at Gert-Johan Coetzee’s galaxy inspired look which also had no denim. What a faux pas. A designer landing on the worst dressed and that to without even following the theme of the night. Our next worst dressed goes to the hit maker Master KG. The producer had the theme on lock however, his look felt a little too busy and incoherent.
All those that didn’t make it into either list weren’t bad but weren’t good enough either. Many looks were underwhelming or had nothing to do with the theme. Some looks were confusing whilst others were disappointing. These ladies are Rachel Kolisi and Boity respectively
We hope next year will be a better year for the red carpet. We here at SavannaNews would like to congratulate all the winners on their trophies and hard work.
