Zimbabwe government speaks on rentals – The Zimbabwean government has resolved that there is not going to be any evictions during the lockdown. Any deferred rentals will not attract interest and will be paid in equal installments after the declaration of the end of the covid-19 lockdown.
Cabinet has resolved that there be a moratorium on both commercial and residential evictions due to applicable lease obligations due from April to end of Lock down including payment of rentals for those months.
Cabinet resolved that rent deferrals shall be free of any interest charges or penalties of whatever nature. Unpaid rentals from April to end of Lockdown will be paid in equal installments after the declaration of the end lockdown period together with rentals due for those months.
Landlords and homeowners who have mortgages to pay for which repayments depends on deferred rentals shall also be entitled to the same relief their tenants got in terms of deferrals.
The move comes when tenants have been facing difficult decisions of rental payments and buying groceries. As a follow up of the President’s first lockdown speech where he mentioned the need to have empathy and be a brother’s keeper, the government decided to crack down a whip on profit seeking landlords.
