Many people know Ayanda Daweti as an actor, especially for his most notable as Chumani Langa on Scandal. His role on the eTV soapie ended after the producers didn’t renew his contract due to the mundane storyline surrounding his role. After leaving Scandal, he appeared as a villain on Gomora, but his fans didn’t know he was simultaneously cooking up a storm in the studio.
He is known as Tuckshop Bafanaz in music circles and has released a song titled Jika, a fusion of hip hop and afro pop. Jika means turn, mainly referring to a particular turn people do when dancing at weddings.
He challenged the rapper Big Xhosa to do a challenge with a video he shared on his Instagram stories. Big Xhosa answered him and agreed on the condition that Ayanda hooks him up with his Gomora colleague Thembi Seete. Both artists are Xhosa, and they have a mutually respectful relationship.
To promote the song, a Jika challenge has been created on TikTok. People are expected to do a wedding step to the music. Also, he released the song just before Mzansi’s biggest wedding season. A lot of people opt to get married from August to December. Most artists release wedding songs just before this period, so they gradually build momentum and become wedding essentials.
Ayanda Daweti’s Jika song cover
In recent weeks Ayanda shared a series of pictures and videos from what looked like his wedding with a bald lady. He used one of the photos of that shoot as his single cover. Many people assumed he was getting married, and many flooded in to send congratulatory messages to him.
It brings the question of whether the wedding happened or whether it was a music video that will be released not too far from the song’s release.
