Chris Brown shared a video of himself jamming to an amapiano song. Amapiano is slowly but surely taking over the global musical sphere. We have to note that genre originated from the townships of Mzansi, and now, big stars like Breezy are catching the wave. Previously, South Africans and South African musicians complained about international songs having more traction in the country.
Complaints went so far that South Africa’s broadcaster SABC decided to play only local music 90% of the time. After implementing the rule, local artists were happy, but the notion died down like it never happened. For now, artists don’t even have to protest as they are getting recognition. Quite frankly, international exposure to Mzansi music began when the genre of gqom became prominent. Since amapiano has taken over, it’s the genre international artists and music fanatics are hooked.
International artists who jammed to local tracks
Chris Brown is certainly not the first international artist to jam to a local genre. Paul Pogba, the soccer player from the UK, shared two videos of himself jamming to amapiano. Swiss Beatz and his wife Alicia Keys once shared a video of them jamming to a gqom song. Swissy was even uttering “Woza woza woza,” as his wife was dancing. If one didn’t know better, you would assume they are used to Mzansi club culture.
Mzansi influence over international songs
Africa, in general, is the biggest and most beautiful influencer in the world. As much as South Africa adopted the genres hip hop and RnB from the West, many artists from the states added some Mzansi flavour in their songs. David Guetta, for one, featured Master KG and made magical music together. On the music video of Beyonce’s Run The World music video, she featured two pantsula dancers. Her dancers were from Mozambique, but pantsula was initially a dance from Mzansi.
Amapiano flavour
Breezy got bitten by the amapiano bug. Amapiano is just one of those self-explanatory genres. Firstly, you can’t help but move when you hear it. Amapiano has a laid back vibe about it that’s associated with the soft life and freedom. Now that more and more people are jamming to it, it can only get higher from here. Right now, it’s amapiano to the world.
