The was drama at a funeral when a cross border transporter popularly known as Malaicha had to retrieve other customers’ groceries that were mistakenly buried with a Covid-19 victim as he fell asleep.
The transporter is reported to have transported the body of a Zimbabwean who died of Covid-19 in South Africa together with other people’s goods. The tired driver took a nap as the victim was being buried by the relatives. He woke up to realise his customer’s goods had also been buried with the victim. He rushed to the grave site to retrieve the bags.

The incident has brought attention to the risks being taken by these Malaicha who are exposing people to Covid-19 through the goods being transported and mixed up with groceries.
Information secretary Nick Mangwana spoke about the incident, “The smuggling of goods hidden as contraband in a coffin carrying the remains of a Covid19 victim is a concern. The people that handle, use or eat such goods are being exposed to the virus. One never knows how prevalent the practice is but this may explain some local transmissions”

The government has also introduced other measures that will guide the conduct at funerals across the country. Police and Health officials will be deployed at funerals Covid-19 measures and only four people would be in the room with the body. Traditional leaders, ministries, NGOs and Community Based Volunteers will be trained to play a role in enforcing the regulations.
