Veld fire burns down Rhodes Memorial Restaurant at the Table Mountain National Park
Rhodes Memorial Restaurant exploded due to the massive veld fire at the Table Mountain National Park, Cape Town. Causes of the veld fire are not yet confirmed. The fire was too massive that the smoke and flames could be seen from a distance.
It is an unfortunate incident and hopefully there were no fatalities. Veld fires are blazes that get out of control, become wild, and destroy extensive tracts of forests, grasslands, animals, people and their properties in the process .
People close to the scene believe the exorbitant temperatures caused the fire. A local resident comments saying that it was too hot in Cape Town the time the fire started.
“Cape Town weather was scary today even for those far from table mountain, the heat and the wind was unbearable,” reports one witness.

Every year there is a reported incident of a fire at the Table Mountain and something must be done to avoid these and worse damages. The reason why these fires are experienced every year should also be found so that the problem can be addressed.
The incident seems strange after the University of Cape Town Library also burned down. To have two huge fires in the same city requires a lot work and commitment. Members of the public appreciate the work done by fire fighters, emergency services, volunteers and everyone who was involved in rescuing students from the University of Cape Town.
Most veld fires result from human actions that originate from the disposal of cigarettes, burning of vegetation when preparing fields, use of fire by hunters etc. These can all be avoided by spreading the news and making communities aware of the causes and ways to prevent these fires.
