Thuli Phongolo ‘Lerato’ fired from The Wife series for blue ticking show producers.
Actress Thuli Phongolo has been shown the exit door and seen her Lerato character written off from The Wife Showmax drama series, entertainment commentator Phil Mphela reports.
The Wife series inspired by Dudu Busani-Dube Hlomu The Wife novels hits the screens late in 2021 with a unique storyline of crime, love and affection. The series mainly focuses on the Hlomu character played by Mbalenhle Mavimbela, who got married to a taxi driver and the third eldest of the Zulu boys Mqhele role played by Bonko Khoza.
Thuli Phongolo fired from The Wife
Thuli Phongolo plays the role of Lerato on The Wife; her character is a journalist, close friend and workmates with Hlomu. She works for the Joburg Informer media house, famous for getting things done through seduction; she trapped her supervisor sleeping with her for favours.
Being Hlomu’s closest friend and advisor, Lerato was initially against her friend marrying a taxi driver to stick with Sandile (Kay Sibiya), a medical doctor.
Thuli quickly becomes fans favourite due to her off-screen popularity and her bubbly presents on the show. Her ability to get along with the most challenging and ever-smiling characters, coupled with excellent acting skills, offered The Wife fans Thursdays to remember.
The Lerato character has been written off The Wife storyline because actress Thuli Phongolo became hot-headed and failed to show up on time to shoot scenes. Producers and showrunners grew frustrated with the actress behaviour and showed her the exit door.
According to sources close to the actress, Thuli concentrated more on the paying and growing DJ career with instant cash flow than the acting one.
“She just behaved like a normal being, chasing money; her November and December booking schedule was too tight to shoot series scenes.”
Despite showing frustration to see their favourite exiting the show, Mzansi suggested that Thando Thabethe replace the former Generations The Legacy actress. Scores of fans blamed her alleged boyfriend DJ Maphorisa for holding Thuli Phongolo hostage after the pair was spotted in the same room at a hotel.
