Background
Phila was born in Johannesburg where his father resides. However he was raised by his grandmother in Port Elizabeth along with his other siblings and cousins. He then moved back with his father. Whilst living with his father, his music inspired him and changed his life’s course forever.
Educational Background
His inspiration from his father led him to find his voice and the entertainment bug bit him. Consequently he went on to study Film and Television production at Varsity College. “I was surrounded by elders who were listening to RnB artists like Keith Sweat, Brian McKnight, and Usher. Singing was cool from a young age so I learned how to do it, and music is in my family, so it wasn’t that hard to transition into music,” he says.

Career
His first TV role was on Intersexions. He ended up having to drop out of college when he took a leading role in Intersexions as it took up more of his time. Phila played Zolile a student from the Eastern Cape with a girlfriend in the city but falls for another girl back home.
He then played Sizwe in Isikizi from season 1 up until season 2. His character was so phenomenal he won a Golden Award for Best Achievement in Original Music/Score on TV Drama. “I did not think we were going to win the award but it shows that hard work pays off and when I received the invite to attend the awards I was already on my way home to Port Elizabeth,” he retorted when asked about the award. Phila then went on to play the part of Buntu on the Queen, alongside Sthembiso SK Khoza and Loyiso Macdonald.

His music career started when he went on SA Idols. He made it to the Top 16 round. However his father having appeared a year before on the show had people believe that his father influenced the result. The idea even caught DJ Mo Flava’s attention and he addressed the issue on Metro FM’s morning fix. Phila did not seem to care for it and it did not bother him. He even seemed spurred on by the idea of showing people that he is his own man.
