Mtshabezi river swallows up truck, leaves two people stranded
Two men are stranded in Mtshabezi River in Siyoka area 100km West of Beitbridge Town. This happened when the duo’s attempt to cross the flooded river failed and their truck was swept away by the violent waters.
The two men managed to swim and climb some tall trees in the river. The incident occurred at around 1am and the two still on top of the trees since.
Mr Morris Mhlanga a villager confirms that they have alerted the Civil Protection Unit.
“The two were travelling to Madzivhe area when the truck was swept away off a damaged bridge. We are still on the scene while waiting for help. Our worry is that the trees might give in and be swept away as water levels continue to rise,” said Mr Mhlanga.
He also says that they are afraid to get into the water and try to save the stranded men because water levels are rising continuously.
The District Civil Protection Unit is organizing a rescue team to help the two men. They are engaging the Army to provide a helicopter if need be.
