Age, Education and Upbringing
Lebohang Motaung was born on the 25th of May 1981 in Daveyton, East Rand where he grew up. In 1999 after winning the Best Actor award at Willowmoore High School in Benoni. He went on to study Dramatic Arts at the University of Witwatersrand graduating in 2004.
Career
Motaung’s most prominent role on television is that of Jabu, Reneilwe’s sugar daddy, in the e.tv soap opera “Rhythm City”. He said that when he auditioned for the role he had no idea he was going to be playing a sugar daddy but hopes he was able to tell the story well. Lebohang was able to land another recurring role as ‘Kotsi’ in the drama series “Mamello” which aired on SABC 2.
Lebohang Motaung is also known as Lebohang Masimola, Lebo Masemola and Lebogang Masimola. With these aliases he has guest starred in a number of television productions such as The Wild, iNkaba, Zabalaza, Zero Tolerance and Rhythm City. He has also appeared in Mzansi Magic telemovies like “Imali Yegazi” and “Call Centre” both of which were under the Lokshin Bioskop strand.
Lebohang has also made a name for himself in theatre as a member of the Drama for Life Playback Theatre Company based at Wits. He actually started out at Sibikwa Community Theatre Project in 1999 after winning the Best Actor award at Willowmoore High School in Benoni. The following year he wrote his first play A Season of Hope. Lebohang is a Naledi Award nominee. In 2019 Motaung played ‘Mabasa’ in the television series “Shadows” streamed by Netflix. Lebohang Motaung transcends platforems and we know this because in the beginning of 2020 he came out with his own webseries named “I Don’t Need A Man”. He describes it as a drama webseries with elements of comedy.
At the current moment on SABC 2 Lebohang Motaung plays ‘Mamba’ in its new medical drama “Vutha”. He is cast alongside a star studded cast with actors such as Mmarona Matshegoa, Kabelo Moalusi and Ayanda Bandla.
Philanthropy
In 2015 from 28 August to 6 September at the Lebohang Motaung showcased his play “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” at the Joburg Theatre. The main aim of the play was to create a foundation that would help future South African film and performing students with their tuition fees at school. Lebohang said, ““The objective for which the group is established is to raise tuition funds, which will assist students in their endeavours to study the performing arts and to encourage young artist to pursue the arts academically,” he said.
Lebohang Motaung clearly has the talent and the experience. Let’s see how that translates on Vutha, as he plays Mamba, and how his gifts compliment the other actors. Other than that we are excited to watch the character Mamba come to life.
