It’s been a significant amount of time since media personality Khanyi Mbau decided to bleach her skin. However, it appears that some social media users are still unable to let go of this topic.
Facing the Trolls
Khanyi is no stranger to online trolls. On a particular Thursday morning, she found herself the subject of discussion yet again.
The social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) was flooded with users reacting to Khanyi’s appearance (specifically her skin tone) in an old interview she did with broadcaster Debora Patta.
Addressing Skin Lightening
In July 2020, Khanyi responded to comments about her decision to lighten her complexion. She encouraged women to feel comfortable in their own skin and embrace whatever beauty regime made them happy.
Defining Blackness
Khanyi expressed that being black is not just about physical appearance but a state of being. She argued that being black is about one’s spirit, thoughts, and self-perception, and it doesn’t necessarily mean one has to look indigenous.
She questioned why society restricts individuals from exploring and being who they want to be. She openly admitted that many celebrities lighten their skin as part of their image and lifestyle.
Khanyi confirmed to news reporters that she spent R95,000 on her last cosmetic surgery in 2017. The procedures included a waist reduction, liposuction, and some work on her breasts.
A Message to Haters
Khanyi has always been vocal about her choices and has never shied away from addressing her critics. She asserted her freedom as a black woman who does what she wants regardless of societal opinions.
