Vusi was born and bred in the Meadowlands, North Soweto Johannesburg, South Africa in 1966 Kunene became interested in acting at the Shell Road to Fame School of the Arts. While studying at Wits University he first appeared in three films, Kunene combined his studies at Wits with his natural talent to attain his full potential.
