Phakamani Mahlambi, a former Mamelodi Sundowns player, is bracing himself for a legal battle as he faces charges related to domestic violence. Scheduled to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on May 22, Mahlambi is determined to avoid incarceration.
His defense strategy involves submitting representations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in an effort to challenge the prosecutor’s decision to charge him. Additionally, Mahlambi aims to persuade the NPA to drop the assault case filed against him by his girlfriend.
The incident unfolded when Mahlambi’s girlfriend, whose identity remains confidential for legal reasons, reported that he assaulted her. According to her police statement, the altercation occurred after she mentioned her cousin’s intention to visit and help them resolve their issues. In front of friends who were visiting him, Mahlambi allegedly lost his temper, slapping her and delivering a punch to her solar plexus.
Following his arrest, the victim expressed her intention to withdraw the case. Sebenza police station spokesperson Sergeant Sharron Tsotsotso confirmed that Mahlambi’s girlfriend plans to drop the charges against the former player, who also had a stint with former PSL side Bidvest Wits.
As the court date approaches, Mahlambi remains hopeful that the legal process will favor him, allowing him to put this chapter behind him.
