The Hawks, operating in KwaZulu Natal (KZN), have made a significant seizure, confiscating cocaine worth R15 million at the Richards Bay Port of Entry on the north coast. According to Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo, the KZN Hawks spokesperson, this operation took place on Monday, with their team collaborating closely with external partners during the Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Richards Bay.
The illicit drugs were allegedly concealed within a ship arriving from Colombia, which was ostensibly transporting iron. Mhlongo explained that they received intelligence about a vessel en route from Columbia to Richards Bay, intending to import iron into South Africa. However, alongside the legitimate cargo, the ship was also carrying drugs. An inquiry was promptly registered, leading to a meticulously planned disruptive operation.
Upon the vessel’s arrival, a thorough search was conducted, revealing a substantial block of cocaine with a street value of R15 million. Although no arrests have been made at this stage, the investigation continues. Hawks Provincial Head General Dr Lesetja Senona commended the successful drug seizure, expressing gratitude to all involved parties, particularly the external stakeholders. Their collective efforts ensured that these dangerous drugs did not find their way onto the streets of our country. The Hawks remain committed to collaborating with internal and external partners to track down and apprehend those responsible for drug trafficking
