Chitungwiza houses face demolition
11 200 houses set for demolition in Chitungwiza. This number rises after more two hundred houses are on a graveyard.
Top of the list is Nyatsime suburbs with 9500 houses. Part of the Nyatsime’s graveyard encounters the expansion of residential areas. The council awaits approval from the full council meeting and accompanying legal documents from the local courts. This proposal will leave thousands homeless.
Most sites proposed for demolition lie on areas reserved as wetlands, recreational facilities expansion, commercial expansion and cemeteries. Recently houses built on wetlands in Harare, Gweru and Kadoma have been experiencing massive flooding.
This type of improper planning leads to more problems in residential areas like poor drainages, poor reticulation and water shortages.

Sites for demolition include stands in Unit A, Unit G, Unit J, Unit K, St Mart’s and Zengeza 5. In 2020 more than 30 settlements were set for demolition but the High Court order was issued to halt the act. The council’s Chief Security Officer Godwin Mvere addresses to the Town Clerk,
“This memo serves to submit the list of proposed demolition sites. These are from the minutes of a meeting on 21 December 2020 chaired by me. I have cross checked the list with the one earlier submitted by the housing department and they are similar in most respects. I have asked the absence of commercial sites on the list. This list may now go to the Legal Department to ensure that none of the structures herein do not escape the ruling by the Justice Amy Tsanga in October-November 2020….any other High Court ruling act is under litigation.”
