Busi Lurayi has a very colourful and established career as well as the awards to confirm her talent. Her career started out in 2003 with a role in a musical remake of Sarafina! Busi is best known for her role as ‘Phumzile’ on the hit sitcom “City Ses’la” from 2005 to 2006 and again in 2010. This role earned her the Golden Horn Award for Best Supporting Actress in a TV Comedy in 2006 and the Golden Horn Award for Best Actress in a TV Comedy in 2011. Her character was so enjoyable she starred as ‘Phumzile’ again in the spin-off “Ses’top La” in 2012. The show was renewed for a second season in 2014.
Lurayi left “City Ses’la” after the first season to join the cast of the ITV drama series “Wild At Heart” about a British family who relocates to a game reserve in South Africa. She played ‘Thandi’, a teacher who home schools the children, in the second season of the show. Busi made a guest appearance on the medical drama series “ER”, playing the role of ‘Sittina’ in the episode entitled “There Are No Angels Here” in May 2016.
She played the starring role of Winnie Molepo, in the SABC1 drama series Sokhulu & Partners, since 2008 and also in November 2011 she joined the cast of the SABC1 soapie Generations in the role of Swazi Lukhele, a socialite wife who was married to David Lukhele but in the process of divorcing him. The next year brought us the Mzansi Magic sitcom S.I.E.S. where she was a main cast member playing the head of the incompetent government department of Social Impact and Empowerment Strategy. Busi tried her hand at presenting in 2013 as the host of the M-Net game show Million Rand Money Drop.
Later on
2019 brought Busi back into theatre when The Market Theatre and US Mission in SA will commemorate Black History Month with the South African premiere of “Nina Simone Four Women” Lurayi now plays the role of a specialist obstetrician, ‘Lungile Asumadu’, on “Vutha”, who refuses to hand over the reins and go on maternity leave. The character is also the wife of ‘Ayiteyi Asumadu’ played by Leroy Gopal. The show premiered on SABC 2 on the 3rd of September of 2020.

Despite Busi Lurayi’s attempts at being private her scandals always seem to find their way out in the public eye. Busi was charged with theft by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court from an incident that happened in 2015. Lurayi’s former partner and father of her daughter Mziwoxolo Qwelane opened a case against her at the Randburg police station. She spent two nights in a holding cell when she was arrested. Qwelane told the police when he went to the Eastern Cape to visit his home he left the keys to his home in Johannesburg with the domestic worker. When he came back R200 00 worth of furniture was stolen. This was after he had received a message from his former partner Busi Lurayi that she would pass by to pick up her belongings. CCTV footage revealed that Lurayi’s car was seen at his home loading the goods.
Busi has been sentenced to house arrest and community service with an R48 000 fine or imprisonment for two years.
