Where is Big Zulu originally from?
Siyabonga Nene A.K.A Big Zulu was born on the 17th of April 1987 in Bergville, KwaZulu Natal. He was not privileged to grow up in a successful family but he swore he would live a better life. In his childhood, Siyabonga listened to a lot of Maskandi and Scathamiya which drew him to like showbiz. His greatest influence came from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Phuzekemisi and Imithende.
Before the fame
Big Zulu was not successful in school, therefore he turned to the taxi rank to earn a living. Soon he began driving taxis and spend several years earning a living from the taxis. This is where he developed his Inkabi rap style through influence from the taxi feuds and gangs. In 2008 he quit the taxi life to pursue a career in the entertainment industry.
When did Big Zulu get a breakthrough?
After quitting his job, in 2009 Big Zulu began writing and performing his own music. Door started opening up in 2013 when he won the rap contest held by Back to the City and he was crowned King of Rap. Later on, in 2015, he caught the attention of Ntokozo Sithole and subsequently, he was signed to Universal records. From there onwards he managed to work with big names the likes of Damien Marley, Kwesta, Sjava and Zakwe.
