In case you don’t know, Backstage was one of the soapies that launched the careers of many actors that we now know and love in the industry.
Backstage was a story set in Vulindlela, a performing arts school around Johannesburg.
Many people who know the American series called Fame felt like Backstage had the same characteristics.
Backstage premiered on etv on 1st May 2000 and went off the air in 2007. The soapie instantly became one of the most-watched on tv, because of its vibrant storylines, but primarily because of the fascinating cast.
The cast of Backstage had a mixture of big and unknown names. Most of those unknown names are now big names in the entertainment industry.

1. Somizi Mhlongo
Somizi is one of the original cast members of Backstage. He played the character of Thabo, a very talkative and flamboyant dancer who always picked fights. We all know that Somizi is now a household name with his reality show.
2. Dini Nondumo
Dini played the character of Tendai in Backstage, a charismatic nightclub owner and DJ. He went on to play Vuyo Nogaba on Generations. He is now a businessman.
3. Baby Cele
Baby Cele used to play Katlego Rathebe, a teacher at Vulindlela who falls for a student. Baby Cele went on to be in more TV productions, and recently you can catch her in Uzalo as Gabisile.
4. KB Motsilanyane
We first met KB Backstage, and she played a young, naive girl who could sing, who was called Kaybee. KB went on to play Lucilla on Rhythm City and many more. Backstage launched KB as an artist, and you can find her on 7de Laan as Lesedi.
5. Katlego Danke
Katlego was also a newcomer when she came on Backstage to play the role of the unstable Keketso. Katlego went on to play Dineo on Generations and now is on Gomora as Thathi.
6. Clint Brink
Clint Brink was also on Backstage as Shawn Jacobs and played Bradley Paulse in Generations. He is also a SAFTA award winner. Clint is also a musician who has albums under his name. You can see him on Binnelanders as Dr Steve Abrahams.
