Although she loved singing, the acting bug stings her when she cast the musical Sarafina. Mbongeni Ngema gave Baby Cele a shot when she was only 16, and she made the most out of it. “I met Mbongeni Ngema while he is driving down the road, next to my house. I didn’t even have to audition for the part in Sarafina, the musical.”

Film directing career

Opportunities knock once on one’s door, and Baby Cele grabs them whenever she gets a chance. As she plays Portia in “My Perfect Family”, the actress lands an opportunity to learn movie directing and producing. She perfects her craft even as she joins Inkaba in 2012 and Zabalaza, where she plays Gasta. “I would like to direct my feature film shortly and get into producing as well”, Baby Cele says.

Ahead of marrying Thabo, the actress was briefly married to Mandla Mabuza, and before that, she was married to an abusive man who she left as she couldn’t handle it.

Hubby must be doing everything right as Baby Cele is saying I do for the second time. In 2019, the actress and Thabo Maloka renewed their vows in a traditional ceremony. The first part of the wedding is held at Baby’s home in Umlazi and Virginia Airport. Cele fills in on the details and reminisces on how she meets Thabo. “I remember when I first met him at a party and the Mafikizolo song, Ndihamba Nawe, played, and I realised I loved him.”

Depression, a subject barely addressed in African families, leads to actions that devastated Cele’s family. Recently, Baby Cele mourns a tragedy that occurs like a scene in a horror movie. The actress’s cousin shoots his mother to kill before gunning his wife, who survives the gin shots. Mbuso Cele acts in his neighbours’ watch after his mother and wife refuse to follow him, and he immediately flees from the scene with his car at full speed. He is later found lifeless in his car, and he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot.
