ASSA Covid-19 Predictions: The Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA) has made predictions about the impact of covid-19 in South Africa based on the current data and assumptions they deem relevant to the situation. ASSA expects covid-19 caused deaths to reach 48,000 during its peak.
ASSA is the governing body for the actuarial profession in South Africa.
The purpose of the model is primarily to assist actuaries., According to Lusani Mulaudzi, president of ASSA.
Malaudzi added that the predictions are used to answer questions they receive from businesses and other clients about the impact of the pandemic on the South African economy. ASSA reached at 48,000 after taking into consideration the phased opening of the economy that is being implemented by the South Africa government. South Africa moved from level 5 to level 4 of the lockdown to help the economy to rebound from the pandemic.
“Although we had to assume how effective those measures will be. We assumed how effective the lockdown will be because we all don’t know what the effect of it was. We’ll still see that. And we had to make an assumption around the social distancing mechanisms. What the effect of those would be,” ASSA boss Mulaudzi said in a conversation with eNCA about covid-19
Mulaudzi expressed his worry over the dissemination of information during the covid-19 period, something she termed ‘an information pandemic’.
The ASSA chief urged readers and those who make decision based on covid-19 information they get to interrogate it before using it. South Africa currently has 10,015 covid-19 cases with 4,173 and 194 deaths.
