SABC 1 released a trailer for the humorous and gripping show uBettina Wethu, the South African spin-off of the American series Ugly Betty. uBettina is a character who comes from a township setting but has the ambitions of taking over the fashion industry. In season 1, the role was played by the comedian Fareida Metsileng.
In season 2, the role will be played by the former Rhythm City and The Wife actress Kamogelo Molatlhoe. She is taking on the character at Bettina’s peak of her career. Bettina is also more complex and evolved as a character in this season.
The new cast of the show
The show also brought in new actors for various positions. One of them is Lunga Shabalala, who will play the role of Dingaan who broke Bettina’s heart by kissing her but then proposing to the character Naomi.
In the trailer, we see Dingaan telling Bettina he should’ve known his relationship with Naomi would never last. At the same time, he tells her he can never have a romantic relationship with her.
Some of the other new cast members are the former Rhythm City star Itumeleng Bokaba who will be playing the role of Zaza. Former Scandal actor Hungani Ndlovu will play the role of Duma. Duma is Bettina’s new love interest, and their love story will be a tad beautiful, dramatic and very controversial.
Bettina’s progress
In season 1, Bettina struggled to make ends meet whilst working and supporting her family. She finally moved out of her parents home and became independent. This season, she is working as an accounts manager at Brand Management At Nubia. Currently, she also runs and owns a business outside of her job. As usual, the characters Lakhe, Tbang and Brandon are still trying to ruin her career.
Fans are questioning if Bettina will get over the character Dingaan, seeing that Duma is in the picture now. It’s also a mystery how the character will juggle working with the man she was obsessed with and being with a man who loves her. uBettina airs tonight at 19:30, the 15th of August.
