The South African entertainment industry has fast become one of the worlds finest. From the arts industry to small screens, Mzansi has been winning big. However, of interest is the acting industry which has been booming of late. Several star actors have hogged the headlines later after starring in award-winning movies like Connie Chiume and Nomzamo Mbatha.
However, back home, some celebrated personalities have won big despite being school dropouts. Here is a list of celebrated South African actresses who have been winning despite being college dropouts.
Ama Qamata
Her thrust into the limelight came when she was just 17-years-old. The actress was cast in SABC’s sitcom My Perfect Family. However, from there, she has been winning big, from starring in Gomora to playing a lead role in Netflix’s original series Blood and Water.
In Mzansi Magic’s most-watched drama series Gomora she was cast as Buhle Ndaba before playing a lead role as Puleng Khumalo in the hit Netflix series Blood & Water. Of interest is the fact that the actress is a school dropout. The actress was enrolled at the University of Cape Town. However, she had to dump her degree of Theatre and Performance degree in the second year.
Nelisa Mchunu
Like those before her, she discovered her craze for acting whilst young. In a bid to furnish her craze of acting, she enrolled at the University of Witwatersrand to study BA in Media Studies.
However, she failed to foot her fees and was forced to drop out due to home financial woes. In the wake of her dropout, she switched to PR before finding her feet in the acting industry.
South African actresses who are college dropouts but winning big
Minnie Dlamini
The celebrated media personality and actress had to de-register and drop out from the University of Capetown. Her dropout came in the backdrop of a television gig.
She chose her craze for acting over education and it seems as if the big gamble is she did years back is paying off.
Boity Thulo
The bubbly personality dumped her Psychology and criminology degree at Monash University after some financial woes get the better of her.
In the wake of her dropout, she furnished her craze of acting by signing to a casting agency from there the rest was history.
