The former version of Generations created household names including Sello Maake KaNcube (Archie Moroka), Connie Ferguson (Karabo Moroka), Rapulana Seiphemo (Tau Mogale) and Dumisani Mbebe (Dumisani Shabane).

Backstage got cancelled by etv due to failure to adjust to ever-changing viewer preferences. The performing arts-themed soapie faced prime slot rivalry from Isidingo, Generations and 7DeLaan. Despite its early exit, Backstage had one of the best and memorable theme songs. The soap opera bosted a reasonably young, raising and exciting cast, including Katlego Danke and Baby Cele.
