UK returnees test positive for covid-19: Two people with a recent travel history from the United Kingdom have tested positive for covid-19. The cases are returnees stationed at Belvedere teachers college.
In a press statement dated 22 April 2020, the Ministry of Health has informed the public that two UK returnees have tested positive for covid-19. The Ministry of Information said:
Case 26 reported yesterday is a 49-year-old male resident of Harare man recently returned irons the United Kingdom. He is symptomatic, with mild-moderate disease and is receiving medical management under mandatory isolation.
Case 28 also reported yesterday is a 25-year old male resident of Harare who recently returned from the United Kingdom.. is asymptomatic with mild disease and is recovering under mandatory isolation.
The news comes as UK returnees stationed at Belvedere Teachers college are complaining about poor living conditions at the local isolation facility. They complained about the lack of running water among other essential services that the facility lacks. The government dismissed the complains and informed the public that UK returnees were demanding hotel accommodation. The government also reported the UK returnees’ employer had offered to pay for the hotel accommodation but local hotel operators refused to accommodate the group citing covid-19 fears.
The United Kingdom has emerged as an epicentre of the coronavirus, with 133,495 covid-19 cases and 18,100 deaths. More people have died in the UK than in China where the disease is believed to have started in December 2019.
However, the UK is nowhere near the United States of America which recorded 852,703 cases and 47,750 deaths. There are millions of Zimbabweans in the diaspora who left Zimbabwe for better jobs and better standards of living.
Zimbabwe has so far recorded 28 covid-19 cases, four deaths and two recoveries.
