South African celebrities who got in trouble with SARS for tax invasion
Inviting the taxman on your doorstep is the last wish of every citizen; there are many clout chasers on social media with unaccounted for and ill-gotten wealth. South African Revenue Service (SARS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation unit, the HAWKS, make sure politicians, celebrities and rich flaunting tenderpreneurs and money launderers are in constant check.
These South African celebrities once invaded tax
Unathi Nkayi
The taxman obtained a court judgement to attach the musician and Idols SA presenter Unathi’s multi-million-rand home for allegedly singing out of tune in her taxi compliance matters. According to the verdict obtained at the high court in Johannesburg, Unathi owed the SARS over R120 000 income tax, and the debt ballooned to R219 00 after SARS imposed R94 000 in administrative penalties.
Shauwn Mkhize
Multi-millionaire, businesswoman and benefactor of Royal AM FC Shauwn Mkhize’s long battle with the taxman has ended.
However, in precedent-setting judgment, the Gauteng High Court ordered her company to liquidate and placed it under final winding up for failing to settle tax matters with SARS. However n its founding affidavit SARS sets out as of February 1, 2016, ZCMT was indebted to SARS in excess o R122 million.
Bonang Matheba
Despite appearing on Forbes Africa’s 50 Most Powerful Women 2020, the TV personality and businesswoman Bonang once got in hot water with the taxman. Bonang settled her dues with SARS after she briefly appeared before the courts, and SARS dragged Queen B to court for failure to file tax returns from 2008 – 2017. Bonang is believed to have been owing over R1.7million in taxes.
Katlego Danke
The actress who plays Nthati on Gomora found herself on the wrong side of the law after SARS opened a fraud case against her. According to a police statement, Danke allegedly failed to submit her tax returns from 2012-2017.
