What’s even better than seeing South Africans win. MaXhosa Africa is officially going to make it’s feature in Coming 2 America. MaXhosa Africa is a South African knitwear brand founded in 2012 by Laduma Ngxokolo. With all it’s beautiful prints, it’s only proper that the brand gets international recognition.
From the coming to America trailer, one can easily spot Eddie Murphy wearing a MaXhosa piece but he’s not the only one to be wearing MaXhosa pieces as a number of cast member will also be wearing MaXhosa. Of note in the MaXhosa pieces is Nomzamo Mbatha who also features in the international movie. Nomzamo Mbatha has been instrumental in sharing the gospel of MaXhosa Africa to her Coming 2 Africa co-stars. Laduma says he got a call from costume designer Ruth Carter and that was the beginning of MaXhosa Africa’s journey to Coming 2 America. “I had to go back to the drawing board and conceptualise with her and show her various ideas of how I could interpret certain characters from the movie and she chose the best interpretations out of all the characters,”he says.

This is not MaXhosa’s first impressive pick as they have designed a carpet for international hiphop star Swizz beats. The next time you see a MaXhosa piece just know it’s someone in the world in Alicia Keys’ house.
It’s no surprise that Ruth Carter is so well versed in African design. In regards with her design for Black Panther she says,“I think for black Africans, you are probably relating strongly to it because you recognise the prints, the beads, and know what they mean. But for African-Americans, it’s different. They relate to it because it’s a Marvel comic book film and they haven’t seen that done with black people. They are excited to have a superhero that looks like them – we’ve been needing a superhero! We need somebody to fly in and take charge like the Black Panther.”
