“We hate condoms,” Masvingo girls unmasked
Most sexually active girls in Masvingo prefer the morning after pill to condoms. Over 70% of the sampled girls in Masvingo agree with this.
The Zimbabwe National Family planning Council marketing officer Mr Herbert Chikosi in an interview says,
“Research shows that during school days, most pharmacies in Masvingo run out of morning after pills suggesting that sexually active girls prefer them in place of other methods.”
He goes on to explain how worrying the trend is considering that Zimbabwe is trying to eradicate new infections and reduce the HIV and Aids prevalence rate.
“We hate condoms,” Masvingo girls unmasked
During school and university days, health facilities record high incidents of sexually transmitted diseases and high child pregnancies. This behavior discourages the notion of achieving zero infections by 2030.
Mr Chikosi goes on to unveil his concern saying,
“We are unfortunate in Masvingo as most girls are shunning the use of condoms.”
These days the youths are more concerned about falling pregnant ignoring the reality of STIs and HIV and Aids. Free distribution of condos and awareness campaigns still continue as a way of promoting the use of condoms. The war against HIV is a serious one that needs to be taken seriously as well.
