Gweru River Swallows up a double cab and 6 passengers
This morning a Toyota Hilux double cab vehicle with 6 passengers was washed away by floods trying to cross submerged Gweru River Bridge along Matobo Road.
The Gweru Mayor, Mr Josiah Makombe confirms the tragedy. The Sub Aqua unit has been at the incident for retrieval efforts. The incident happened when the driver tried to maneuver across the flooded bridge along Matobo Road which goes to Lower Gweru.
Mayor Makombe during a phone call said, “I have been at the bridge since morning but we have not yet seen the car or its occupants. You can check with me later.”
A witness confirms that the driver ignores instructions not to cross the bridge but insists to do otherwise. This same witness also tipped the Police as soon as the tragedy occurred.
Following the incident, the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting has published a statement. They urge all citizens to desist from crossing flooded rivers and bridges. This comes after numerous incident of people marooned by rivers in Chiredzi and Chivi.
