Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha Beats Cancer
Legendary TV actor Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha who plays notorious gangster Neo Mokhethi on e.tv’s popular soapie, Scandal! has revealed his battle with prostate cancer.
The actor who kept his diagnosis a secret while he continued acting opened up on his battle with cancer to the public for the first time.
He told Sowetan he was diagnosed in October last year and only told his family, close friends and work associates.
“Last year October I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and I only shared the shocking and devastating news with my family, close friends, and colleagues,” said Mofokeng wa Makhetha.
He said he was ordered to undergo radiation treatment immediately.
Makhetha went through five weeks of radiation therapy and after three weeks he received the good news that all the symptoms of cancer had disappeared and he was in remission.
He said he was not worried although everyone around him was, saying: “Even though everyone around me was very worried about my health, I was not because I am spiritually and mentally strong.”
Makhetha told the publication that acting was a much needed distraction which he said saved his life.
He said he would start his day early by getting therapy first before heading to work.
“I was able to do this because when I’m on set, I feel no pain and looking forward to acting helped me cope with the gruelling radiation.”
Makhetha is remembered for his performance in the 2005 Academy Award-winning film, “Tsotsi”, as well as the critically acclaimed movie “Cry The Beloved Country” and M-Net’s hit series, “Tracker”.
The actor’s latest film, “Not a Burial, It’s a Resurrection”, premiered at this year’s Durban International Film Festival (DIFF).
