Winnie Khumalo is a successful South African singer, songwriter and actor who has been in the music industry for decades. She was born on the 20th of July 1973 in Mofolo North, Soweto. Winnie was raised by her grandmother and constantly got into trouble for skipping school to record music. She has a son with former world boxing champion Dingaan Thobela who is called Thando Khumalo. Moreover, she has a daughter with her ex-husband, the former bubble- gum musician Seabee of Thiba fame. Her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo followed in her mother’s footsteps by also becoming an artist. Rethabile is currently signed to Afrotainment.

Winnie Khumalo ‘studied at Vuyo Lower Primary school in Soweto. Afterwards, she proceeded to Esiyalwin Higher Primary then attended Mncube Senior Secondary school. After completing her Secondary school Winnie Khumalo ditched the education route to success and followed her musical dream.

At 15, she released her first solo album called Hey Laitie, Tshina Tshina, which was produced by Sello Twala. At the same time, she also released the album Dlamini. She has a gospel album called Izono Zami produced in the ’90s by South African pastor Langa Dube. After her comeback in 2008 after a break, her fourth album Live my life was produced and released by Kalawa Jazmee. This particular album went off the charts, having sold off 25000 copies and 50000 downloads on mobile. Winnie Khumalo grew in the music industry by being the lead vocalist for Brenda Fassie.

Aside from being a vocalist to stars like Brenda Fassie, Sipho Mbele among others in her heydays, she has sung songs like Izono Zami recorded in the ’90s, I just wanna live my life, and Mina Ngiyohlala Nginje performed with Jacob Zuma in the run-up to the 2009 elections. DJ Cleo ft Winnie Khumalo is a hit song by the duo released in 2017. Winnie Khumalo is also gifted with the talent of acting. She appeared in Muvhango on of South Africa’s biggest TV shows she played the role of a sangoma. Likewise, she featured in Chicco Twala’s low budget movie titled “My sh*t father and my lotto ticket” (Madluphuthu) as Madluphuthu’s mother. Surprisingly, the movie was highly accepted by Africans. Similarly, she staged a play titled ‘The Journey’ and another one titled “The Brenda Fassie Musical”. The play was directed by Jerry Mofokeng and she played the role of Brenda Fassie. In 2019 she collaborated with Oskido, Dj Cleo, Musuba vimba, Nokwazi. She also dropped her single Ixesha in late 2019. Winnie Khumalo opened 2020 on a good note with her hit single ‘Phezulu’.

Rhethabile Khumalo is the biological daughter of Winnie Khumalo. The songstress was born on 9th September in the year 1996. Despite being the daughter of a famous musician, Rethabile has struggled to get to where she is now.
