Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) opens another registration window to accommodate candidates who failed to register of November 2020 exams and revealed new exam fees.
The relief will also apply to other candidates who failed to pay the top up examination fees adjusted by Government when it announced a new exam fees structure, with a subsidy of 53 percent.
Speaking before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee, Zimsec director Dr Lazarous Nembaware said that Zimsec do not want any candidate to be barred from exams.
He revealed that May exams will be moved to June due to lockdown restrictions.
New Zimsec Exam Registration Fees
New exam fees will be $90 per O-Level subject and $165 for A-Level subject. Government said it will pay 53 % of the total exam fees which had been worked out at $190 for O-Level subjects and $351 for A-Level.
“We have closed registration for June and November, but for November we are going to open a window so that those who were disadvantaged by Covid-19 we will be able to accommodate them,” said Dr Nembaware.
He said the number of registered O-Level candidates were 60 000 which is 15 000 less than those for last year which stood at around 75 000.
“The reason might be many, but we might single out, maybe, the raising of Zimsec exam fees from $15 to $90 and $190 for private candidates. Also Covid-19 played its part because we started scaling down operations in Zimbabwe on 30 March 2020 when the nation was locked down. Parents, candidates and headmasters had problems in the registration,” he said.
Dr Nembaware said in printing of the question papers, Zimsec was compliant with all the health regulations such as handwash, sanitising, observing social distance and disinfecting the area.
He said the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education would also put in place health measures during examinations.
