The ruling party in Zimbabwe Zanu PF is planning to demonstrate against killing of an African American George Floyd at the US Embassy in Harare. Their first request from the police was turned down as due to the lock down rules currently in place that bans all demonstrations. The party is reportedly looking for ways to go ahead with the George Floyd protests.
The police responded to Zanu PF in a letter addressed to the Political Commissar Victor Matemadanda barring the party from demonstrating in Westgate. The Chief Superintendent for Harare District Smart Matongo cited Section 5 (1) of S.I 83 that bars public gatherings during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“May you shelve this idea until we have passed the pandemic phase,” Matongo signed off.
