Dodgy Zimbabwe businessman and tenderprenuer Wicknell Chivayo popularly known as Sir Wicknell is in trouble with the law again the Supreme Court has reversed his acquittal by the High Court yesterday.
Wicknell Chivayo is the managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe. In May 2016 that Chivayo was awarded tenders to build a power station. The tender deals awarded to Intratrek and its partners included; a $73 million refurbishment of the Harare power station; a $163 million project to restore Munyati power station; a new $128 million hydropower station at Gairezi; and a $202 million 100MW solar power plant in Gwanda.
He was given an advance of USD 5 million for preliminary work. No work was ever done and a visit by parliamentarians at his Gwanda Solar farm exposed him as no progress was ever done. The legislators only saw a metal cabin in the middle of a jungle.
Chivhayo was arrested on fraud charges but was acquitted in 2019. Former Energy Minister Samuel Undenge was also arrested in the same period on 4 January 2018.
The news of the resurfacing of Chivayo’s legal issues comes as Undenge just lost an appeal to have his sentence reduced as he is currently serving 30 months in prison.
Former Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) board chairperson Stanley Kazhanje was convicted over a $10,000 that he received from Chivayo to facilitate the transfer of $5 million to Intratrek with no guarantees.
President Mnangagwa once warned Chivayo that Chikurubi Maximum Prison is not full. Mnangagwa warned that the mistake of awarding tenders to people like Wicknell Chivayo on the Gwanda Solar Project should never be repeated. Mnangagwa made the remarks soon after touring Nyangani Renewable Energy, a solar power project in Mutoko.
