If there is an epitome for Mzansi’s one-hit wonders, then Mgarimbe is it. Mgarimbe released an entire album with Sister Bethina as the hit song. Like many one-hit wonders, Sister Bettina still holds relevance today. Where is the artist, though?
Sister Bethina song
Sister Bettina used such derogatory words, but the message on the song made a lot of people relate to it. The song’s main lyrics are ‘ Sidl’ubusha bethu ‘, which means we’re enjoying our youth to the fullest. With so many people going crazy over the music, many people have suggested that the song gets incorporated in Mzansi’s national anthem.
The radio version of the song
When Mgarimbe released it, it didn’t do too well on the airwaves. Due to the explicit lyrics, the song wasn’t played on radio stations. Mzansi pushed for a radio version. Seeing that the song got little airplay, Mgarimbe received no awards despite being one of Mzansi’s biggest songs.
Sister Bethina controversy
Despite the song’s lyrics, Sister Bettina was claimed to be stolen. A man claimed he made the beat on Fruity Loops and sold it on CDs in the streets. One night, Mgarimbe and his DJ friend Jabu played the beat, and people got crazy. Mgarimbe jumped on stage and started singing the lyrics. Luckily Jabu recorded the whole thing. Mgarimbe never confirmed or denied the rumours, but he did justice on the song.
Where is Mgarimbe now?
Over the years, he kept continuously performing the song at various gigs. For a song released in the mid-2000s, the relevance it holds today is quite impressive. Cassper Nyovest made a song with him called Gologo no Beer. People liked it, but it wasn’t as big as Sister Bettina. After the feature with Cassper, he completely disappeared off the radar.
Many artists disappear from the radar as they focus more on their businesses. Some artists fall off, go broke, and some do drugs and go homeless. We do not know where he is, but we hope he’s still well.
