Two people lost their lives, and one sustained severe injuries after two vehicles collided head-on on the R72 road in Port Alfred, about 18 km towards East London. The grisly crash occurred on Saturday afternoon at about 16:30. A Polo Vivo with one female occupant driving from Port Alfred towards East London collided with a Toyota Corolla with two occupants – a male driver and a female passenger – heading towards Port Alfred from East London. Both occupants from the Toyota Corolla died on the scene while the female occupant from the VW Polo Vivo sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Port Alfred Hospital for further medical treatment.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said that a case of culpable homicide was opened for further investigation. He also stated that it is not yet clear whether the two people who died in the accident are related. However, what is clear is that reckless and negligent driving often results in head-on collisions and continues to be a source of grief for many families who lose their loved ones on our roads.
The MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape, Mr Xolile Nqatha, is calling on drivers to be extra vigilant, be patient and help avoid avoidable accidents like head-on collisions. On Saturday, the Provincial Transport Department reported that four people were killed in two separate accidents.
