The history of South Africa’s National Youth day
On 16 June 1976, High school students led a demonstration in Soweto and faced a brutal crackdown by the police. The police brutality in trying to stop the protests led to even more demonstrations spreading across the country. The police fired Iive bullets, and many students died in the demonstrations. Among them was 13-year-old Hector Pieters, who got hit by the police. Fortunately, the young boy survived the shot, thanks to his close friend and sister, who hurried him to the hospital.
