Warriors given the green light to resume training
With the CAF competition commencing on the 16th of January, the government of Zimbabwe has finally granted the warriors the go-ahead to train and take part in the competition. This comes after fifteen members of the warrior’s squad tested positive of the Covid-19 virus last year in December.
Since 28 December, the infected staff was in quarantine and will be tested again on the 10th of January before leaving for Cameroon. However, positive members of the squad will be replaced.
Confirming this ZIFA says:
“The Zimbabwe Football Association advises the nation that our application to proceed with participation at the African Nations Championship (Chan) has been approved by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC).
“This follows the Government’s recent suspension of all sporting activities in a national effort to reduce the spread of Covid-19. The Association would like to acknowledge and thank the SRC for swift processing of our request to keep our preparations for the important assignment on track,”
With this pandemic worsening, fingers are crossed that squad tests negative so that the first picked players represent the nation. Its been a long time since the warriors have brought silverware home. This competition is a chance for the Zimbabwe national team to prove themselves at a continental level.
Since the competition was started Zimbabwe has only failed to reach the finals. This is a huge boost for the boys as they have a good record in this competition. The only time they failed to reach a final was when they lost a penalty shootout to Namibia. The coaching staff assures their supporters that they have worked on all aspects and expect to provide pleasing results. This is all if the players are not Covid-19 infected.
