South Africans are known to engage in different forms of protests to get their voice heard by the government.
The residents of Umzinyathi for long complained about the lack of water and electricity services, decided to block the R33 with stones, and dug up the road.
The Mayor Petros Mthandeni Ngubane said most of the communities in Umzinyathi were in the deep rural parts and it was therefore hard for them to deliver services as quickly as residents expect them to.
He went on to notify South African Police Service about the criminal activities and destruction of property that had taken place.
The R33 road was damaged in eBhovini, between Pomeroy and Dundee on Tuesday.
The Mayor said he is glad that Eskom has upgraded its power plant and the protesting community will soon have access to electricity.
“I’m glad that Eskom has upgraded the power plant. We expect that by next week or the following week that more areas will have access to electricity.”
